If you are an international traveller or travel a lot then Airports trips are likely going to be part of your regular routine. As a prolific Traveller, you probably already know that not all airports were created equally. Airports vary across the world. They differ in the amount of traffic (i.e the amount of average annual travellers), the quality of the infrastructures, the size of the airport and so much more.
Some different characteristics and features make most of the airports on this list one of the top airports in the world.
We have compiled a list of the top 10 airports around the world and their quirks

2. Tokyo Haneda
With domestic and international terminals, Tokyo International Airport Haneda as one of the top 10 airports in the world, plays a major role in the growth of Japan. This is especially true because Japan positions itself as a tourism-oriented country. Haneda has been ranked the best Airport in 2019: 70 + million travellers. It is ranked the World Cleanest Airport, World Best Domestic Airport, and Best PRM / Accessible Facilities in the World
One of the two major airports in Tokyo and the predominant domestic hub for Japan’s two major airlines, Japan Carriers and All Nippon Airways, Haneda operates most domestic flights to and from the region as well as a rising number of international routes.
Haneda International Airport grew into one of the best airports in the world after a major facelift in 2010, providing more routes abroad, more in-house dining and entertainment options, and making commuting to the city simpler.

How to Get There.
Connection by train, monorail, bus or taxi to Haneda Airport.
Through train: Taking the Shinagawa JR Yamanote Line. Switch to the Keikyu Airport Line to Haneda Airport from there. It can take up to 30 minutes to travel from Shinagawa.
By Monorail: The Tokyo Monorail offers a beautiful seaside ride to Haneda Airport from Hamamatsucho Station, also on the Yamanote Line. It takes 13 minutes to express transportation.
By bus: Haneda Airport is operated by a variety of limousine buses from major rail stations and hotels in the greater area of Tokyo.
Via cab: Multiple providers offer to and from Haneda Airport flat-rate taxi services. Extra costs for late-night facilities and surcharges on the expressway.
While preparing your tour, be mindful that there is no 24-hour public transport in Tokyo. This is a tad bit disappointing especially if the Airport wants to retain its position as one of the top ten airports in the world. The first transfers to the airport via the Tokyo Monorail and Keikyu Railways arrive at 5:15 and 5:30 at the international terminal. Early morning bus services start arriving at 4:30 from the middle of Tokyo and Yokohama. The last trains and buses to the city stop just after midnight for late-night deliveries.
Haneda’s history
Haneda Airport began in 1931 as Haneda Airfield, situated on what is now the airport complex’s southern end. It acted as Japan Air Transport’s chief operating base at this period and managed domestic flights and flights to Taiwan and Korea, both of which were then under Japanese control.
Throughout World War II, the airport was used almost solely for the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service as a hub for military transport facilities and flight training. It became the central port for almost all domestic travel in Tokyo in 1978, as most international flights were moved to the newly built Narita Airport.
The airport was increased in 2010, adding a third terminal for international flights in particular. As the 2020 Olympic Games draws closer, the country is planning for an explosion of international travellers. A new line is expected to link Haneda Airport directly to Tokyo Station in about 18 minutes. Just maybe then there may be 24/7 public transportation; what we are however certain is that the improvements are sure to reinforce The Tokyo Haneda Airport as a top airport.
Airlines at Haneda.
A number of international airlines are currently servicing the airport.
The airport is primarily used by three major domestic companies: All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan Airlines (JAL) and Peach Aviation. A variety of other low-cost airlines fly domestic flights from Haneda, rendering it an inexpensive choice to easily connect to Japan’s far ends.
The other Airlines include:
Air Canada • Air China • Air Do • Air France • Air New Zealand • All Nippon Airways • American AirAsia X • Asiana • British Airways • Cathay Dragon/Pacific • China Airlines • China Eastern • Airlines • Delta Airlines • Eastar Jet • Emirates • EVA Air • Garuda Indonesia • Hainan Airlines • China Southern • HK Express • Japan Airlines • Jeju Air • Juneyao Airlines • Korean Air • Lufthansa • Hawaiian Airlines • Peach • Philippine Airlines • Qantas • Qatar • Shanghai Airlines • Singapore Airlines • Okay Airways • Solaseed Air • Spring Airlines • StarFlyer • Thai Airways • Tianjin Airlines • Tigerair Taiwan • Skymark Airlines • United Airlines • Vietjet • Vietnam Airlines.
What to do when you’re not flying
With Japan’s busiest airport (and one of the world’s top five busiest), Haneda has all you’d expect from a contemporary international and domestic airport that has claims of being one of the best Airports. There is free Wi-Fi, lounges at the terminal, and a range of eating and shopping options.
Special to Haneda, Edo Alley is a foreign airport shopping and dining place in the theme of Tokyo in the 19th century. By crossing a replica of Nihonbashi, the ancient focal point of all roads in Japan, Edo Alley is accessed to intensify the impact. Search for Haneda’s own aviation shrine if you’re in Terminal 1, and pray for a safe flight.
Visit Tokyo Pop Town for more modern Culture, which contains a broad variety of mangas, animes, and character merchandise. Or consider renting out the Global Wi-Fi counter’s futuristic robot tour guide-smartphone hybrid “Robohon”
Accommodation
In each terminal, accommodations are essential and made available for flights entering or leaving outside of public transport hours, or if you just want to relax.
Terminal 3 (the regional terminal) and Terminal 2 all provide regular hotel lodging, while Terminal 1 has the First Cabin capsule hotel on site for a true Japanese sleeping experience.
Travellers can live at one of the lodging choices at the Keikyu Airport Line stations in and around Otorii and Anamori-Inari, many of which give visitors free shuttle buses.
3. Seoul Incheon International Airport
Incheon International Airport is South Korea’s main airport and one of the world’s busiest airports. It is also one of the top Airports in the world. It is a recent recipient at the World Airport Awards, Airport of the Year award. Incheon International Airport was named Best Transit Airport World’s recipient in 2019.
There, visitors sang praises about the facilities, such as in-airport parks, golf, and driving range, year-round skating rink, free city tours, a movie theatre, and the immersive Korean Culture Experience. If all that isn’t enough, passengers in the economy class can purchase access to a variety of airport lounges. These are some of the reasons why the airport made it into our top 10 airports in the world list.
Where to sleep
As a major international centre and one of the best airports in the world, at all hours you can notice travellers asleep in every space. Comfortable seating is ample, however, when one opens, grab a reclining seat or a free massage chair! Travellers are recommended to check out the 3rd & 4th-floor “Rest & Relaxation” lounges which tend to stay quiet and dimly-lit at night. Since gates open just 40 minutes before departure, there is a lot of turnovers, so lounges provide more protection and less noise. There are two transit hotels (inside Security) for uninterrupted sleep, plus a pre-Security capsule house.

4. Doha Hamad International Airport
Hamad International Airport is the global airport for Doha, the capital city of Qatar. The airport has been named the globe’s most architecturally significant terminal building, and the most glamorous. Hamad was rated the best Middle East Airport, Best Airport: thirty to forty million travellers and Best Middle East Airport Staff in 2019. Hamad International is listed as one of the top Airports in the world. This Airport is a strong contender for the Top Airport you would find anywhere.
Standard advice suggests it is most satisfying to arrive two hours ahead of departure time at the airport. Anyone who flies through Qatar’s Hamad International could want to double or even triple that.
Not because of delayed flights or any problems; but because of the sparkling, ultra-modern infrastructures. In reality, if you have signed up to their e-passport system, you’re going to be through in minutes.
It’s basically because you’ll want to enjoy that extra travel time revelling in what’s perhaps the planet’s most lavish airport and one of the best airports the universe probably has to offer.
It is also probably the coolest
Launched in 2014 with the intention of transforming Doha’s Arab Gulf capital into a regional air gateway serviced by Qatar Airways, HIA currently handles over thirty million travellers a year.
Passengers passing through its majestic halls and lounges outside the peak hours may be forgiven for assuming that they were the first to ever set foot in the place.
Silent and spotless.
Every glittering surface of their luxurious areas of departure and arrival is immaculate.
The destination is absolutely quiet. HIA is a quiet airport except for Muslim calls to prayer that are made five times a day.
There are no loud announcements to interrupt the silence, and you could hear a pin drop at certain moments, it’s so silent. Not like in this ultra-clean place you will see so much like a dropped pin.
The complete HIA experience starts at the very entrance— for ow only accessible by car, but a rail service should be completed in time for Qatar’s 2022 holding of the World Cup finals for football.
This is indeed a majestic construction. Constructed on land reclaimed from the sea, the structure reflects its coastline position with a rooftop that spirals in swooping peaks and troughs away from the Concours. A nearby mosque resembles a large droplet of water in brown.
Inside, departing travellers’ step into an elevated check-in space, lit by bright sunlight from lozenge-shaped skylights in the afternoon.
It’s here that you may potentially have one of their first experiences with the things that make HIA so incredibly amazing— the artworks.
Subversive Art.
Well, airport art isn’t necessarily a revolutionary idea, but when was anyone conscious of seeing one in recent times?
No-one at HIA would forget it in a rush. This may very well be one of the reasons why you will not forget about this airport. No discussion about top airports in the world will be complete without including Doha Hamad International Airport.
Back to the arts; some of it is clever, like the fun plastic birds sitting atop the screens of information at the front of the airport. Other pieces stop everybody in their tracks.
As the disruptive Swiss artist Urs Fischer “Lamp Bear”— a huge, surreal yellow teddy bear sitting under a black lamp. It is such an exciting scene in the central departure hall in front of this there is a near-constant crowd of tourists, taking selfie shots.
There is another eye-catching piece of avant-garde modern art that is farther in, by the far-departure gates. “SMALL LIE” by the renowned New York pop artist KAWS is a new addition, created in March 2018 in an action involving removing an entire part of the airport wall.
These are art pieces that some fanatics will potentially be flying to see here.
An airport on the coast of Arabia seems to be a surprising spot to discover cutting-edge works of contemporary art. HIA believes this surprise element will help set it apart from competing air hubs.
What makes HIA unique is its innovative exhibition space. The Qataris are convinced that the airport is the gateway to arts and culture. There are already more than 20 permanent artworks at the airport. Anyone with a couple of hours to kill would do much worse than track them all down.
Not your scene, Surrealist sculpture?
That’s all right, HIA has plenty of options up its sleeves.
Exclusive Ambient
There are plenty of regular airport food and shopping outlets for normal travellers going by and there are also several luxury boutiques. Gucci, Burberry, Adidas, Rolex, all of Swarovski’s here.
Just want to flop into a chair? Even the seating in the communal area is elegant— both chrome and leather in Italian style.
If you mind standing on the moving walkways to get to your gate, there’s a sleek subway train to take you much faster out there.
There’s also a great airport gym— available to any passenger wanting to book in for a session.
It has an inviting swimming pool of 25 meters, a full range of workout equipment, two squash courts (although these can be turned into a golf area), plus hydrotherapy and spa treatment.
The sports complex is adjacent to HIA’s Oryx Hotel, a 100-room transit lodging with consistency and cleanliness that fits the majority of the airport Guests may check in to regular rooms or larger family suites of five or six beds, for eight hours or longer.
Passengers lucky enough to be with Qatar Airways flying business or first class are in for the time of their lives.
The Al Mourjan lounge biz class is the kind of location some tired travellers would actually have to get pulled out of to make their flight.
This Airport is just as large as it is luxurious. The Airport spans 10,000 square meters (talk about a top airport), with elements of Instagrammable water and is capable of handling up to 1,000 passengers at a time.
It is still silent though, with an exclusive club atmosphere. Guests will sit at individual tables fitted with tablets with departure information to make sure they don’t miss their train.

5. Hong Kong International Airport
Hong Kong International Airport is one of our top 10 airports in the world. It hosts more than 100 airlines offering services to about 180 destinations worldwide, including 44 Chinese Mainland destinations. It is an ex, multiple recipients of the World Airport Awards for the award of the Airport of the year. Hong Kong was named Best Dining Airport of the World, and Best Immigration Airport Service of the World in 2019. Our Hong Kong Airport article is a great place to start preparing your stay, whether you have a stopover, overnight sleepover or just pass quickly.
What to look for.
The Hong Kong International Airport is a large complex with two terminals (1 and 2) and two separate contests (Midfield and North Satellite). While the terminals and halls are linked by a driverless rail, and notwithstanding moving sidewalks, navigating around each terminal or hall may still require considerable trekking. Wear comfortable shoes! Across the airport, there are lots of dining, shopping and entertainment options. Go to Terminal 1 for shopping at the SkyMart, or Terminal 2 to SkyPlaza for entertainment. There is free Wi-Fi, and there are lots of power outlets for charging your mobile devices, but you should be told that they only accept Hong Kong / English plugs and USB. Passengers will pay to use one of the 24-hour airport lounges, some of which provide baths, for added convenience.
Where to Sleep.
When searching for suitable sleeping areas, you will have to be on the airside, as there are very few seating areas on the ground. Several seats and benches on the airside have no armrests which make stretching easier. Although reviews are mixed, finding suitable sleeping nooks seems to be more of a case of looking hard enough and you will encounter them rather than it being a lack of them. In reality, the positive reviews of travellers include relaxing quarters, resting spaces, semi-secluded lounge chairs outside exits, cosy sleeping chairs behind food court stores, and plenty of armrest-free chairs in outdoor areas. The airport stays bustling at all hours and is often very noisy at night, particularly when it comes to cleaning staff, so make sure to bring earplugs or headphones that suppress noise. Hotels at Terminals 1 and 2, and many other nearby providing shuttle service are eligible for uninterrupted sleep.
Good to Know.
Be careful when you stay landside. Numerous reports of scam artists preying on visitors asking for cash or food. As one of the best airports around, they need to invest in tighter security to catch some of these fraudsters and deter the rest.

6. Centrair Nagoya
In the year 2014, 9.8 million passengers flew to Nagoya the Central Japan International Airport, commonly known as Centrair. The airport has a substantial percentage of international traffic, with several regional routes to Asian cities run. Frankfurt, Helsinki, Detroit, and Honolulu comprise longer-haul routes. In 2019, Centrair was named Best Regional Airport of the World, and Best Airport: 10-20 million passengers. These are some of the factors we considered that made Centrair Nagoya end up in our top 10 airports in the world list.
Located just on the outskirts of Nagoya, Central Japan International Airport Centrair (Chūbu Kūkō, airport code: NGO) is Japan’s fourth most important international airport after Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita Airports and Kansai Airport.
Built on a man-made isle in the Bay of Ise, Central Japan Airport was opened in February 2005 just in time for the Aichi Expo 2005. It took over all international and most domestic air traffic previously covered by Komaki Airport in Nagoya. It is one of the most comfortable and friendly airports in Japan, providing a wide array of shopping and dining options including even a public bath.
The airport consists of a building with two terminals.
Terminal 1 is the primary terminal used by most airlines for domestic and international flights, while Terminal 2 is a smaller terminal used by discount airlines. In about 5-10 minutes you can walk between the two terminals via moving walkways.
Right next to Terminal 2 is the Flight of Dreams Shopping and Dining Complex, which opened in autumn 2018 and displays the first-ever manufactured Boeing 787 aircraft and is thematized after Seattle, where Boeing’s headquarters was originally located. In addition to shops and restaurants dedicated to Seattle, the complex contains a children-friendly museum about (Boeing) aircraft.
Japanese companies made a significant contribution to the development of the Boeing 787 aircraft.
Access.
Central Japan Airport sits approximately 40 kilometers south of Nagoya. It is easily linked by public transportation to Nagoya and different places via central Japan. The train is the fastest and cheapest option for reaching Nagoya Station.

8. London Heathrow
The next entry on our list of Top 10 Airports in the World is the London Heathrow Airport. London Heathrow Airport is UK’s busiest airport and Europe’s busiest by passenger traffic and has been the biggest international commercial airport in the world, it has recently lost the title to Dubai Airport but it is still one of the very best airports around. Heathrow was voted Best Shopping Airport of the World in 2019, and Best Airport in Western Europe. Terminal 5 was named Best Airport Terminal in the World.
The London Heathrow Airport is accessible 24 hours a day, but the procedure may vary depending on your time of arrival during the night and your specific terminal. For e.g., it seems in Terminal 3 that airport security officials will move all overnight sleepers to one designated area until around 4:00 AM. If you end up at a terminal from which you are not departing from, be sure to check the schedules of the interterminal bus departure so that you arrive at the right terminal in time for check-in.
There is a good amount of seating available in general, although the quality and locations of each of the 4 terminals vary. Expect both metal armrest chairs and different benches with and without armrests or padding. If you arrive to spend the night, you may need to stay in the pre-Secure, public areas until early morning Security checkpoints open. A recent review mentioned that Airside is only allowed overnight stays in Terminal 3. Travelers equipped to sleep on the floor, maybe with a pillow, a sleeping pad or even a sleeping bag, are able to find dimmer corners and do not seem to get any flacks from the airport staff.
Here are good places to snooze reported by travelers.
Terminal 2, you can find a relatively isolated quiet zone when walking from A gates to gatesB31-B49. Make sure you don’t get on the escalator and take the lift down or maybe miss it.
There are padded, armrest-free benches and plenty of power outlets at Terminal 3, above Departures and near the Pret a Manger.
Pre-Security in Terminal 4, as long as you purchase it, you may be able to hang out in the 24-hour cafe for a long time.
Terminal 5, Departures floor above, has a few armrest-free benches in the G section.
Pre-Security, Central Bus Station linked by the underground tunnel connection to Terminals 1, 2 and 3 and to the station.
Rest Zones.
London Heathrow Airport has designated rest areas, perfectly equipped with lounge chairs for tired travellers in need of relaxation. Built over the terminals. There’s also a restroom at Terminal 3, Gates 24-25 with couches, vending machines and more. The London Heathrow Airport has four active terminals (T2, T3, T4, and T5) that are linked by landside shuttle service. Navigation can be a bit complicated given the size and traffic levels of the airport–especially during tight connections and peak travel times. A wide array of services and facilities are available at the airport, with a number of 24-hour options and unlimited free Wi-Fi. It should be noted, however, that not all terminals are created in the same way as the services and facilities at each terminal vary. As a top airport, there are first-class hotels for those looking for a little added comfort while waiting, some of which have showers that passengers in the economy class can pay to access.
Where to Sleep.
As a whole, Heathrow is fairly welcoming of airport sleepers. Although the airport is always bustling during the day, the evening is always so very quiet (the sheer number of travellers is enough reason to make it one of the top airports in the world). If you’re heading to Heathrow overnight, know that different terminals have different levels of comfort and sleep protocols. There are plenty of sleep-friendly seatings available in T2.
Nonetheless, bear in mind that there aren’t many private or dimly lit areas, rendering an eye mask and will be very beneficial here. T3 includes designated rest areas with sofas and lounges. Overnight though, security seems to be trying to round people up into one central area. The best options for sleeping in T4 are landside, and it sounds like the section on the airside may close overnight. When you try to sleep on the plains and you are not a member of the EU, you may be sent to T3. When you wind up at a terminal from which you do not depart, make sure to verify the start times of the interterminal bus departure so that you arrive at the correct terminal in time for check-in. There are sleep cabins in Terminal 4, hotels connected to Terminals 4 and 5, and many other nearby hotels, connected by shuttles, for uninterrupted sleep.

9. Tokyo Narita
Tokyo Narita Airport is a top 10 airport that serves Japan’s Greater Tokyo Region. Narita represents Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways as the Regional gateway. As of 2016, Narita was Japan’s second-most busy passenger airport. Narita was named Best Airport Staff of the World in 2019, and Best Airport Staff in Asia. Many travellers will acknowledge that this airport is one of the best airports around.
What to Expect
Tokyo Narita Airport is split into three terminals (1, 2, so 3), and depending on your terminal the experience can differ. Terminal 1 is split into a North Wing and a South Wing, with further satellite areas branching off both wings. Terminals 2 and 3 are more simplistic, each with a single satellite area and a main building. Low-cost carriers are closest to Terminal 3, so assume less capacity and fewer facilities. The three street-level terminals are linked by buses however expect to walk a lot.
Once inside, there are plenty of dining options, perfect for both Asian and Western cravings, though most restaurants close by 9:00 pm. Go to the Yoshinoya at Terminal 2, Landside, Floor 2 for 24 hours feed.
Wi-Fi is free and you will find plenty of power outlets for charging your devices. Do you want to freshen up? Terminals 1 and 2 moves to the pay-to-use shower facilities. Economy class travellers can upgrade their stopover by paying for entering one of several lounges at airports.
Where to Sleep.
Travellers acknowledge that this airport is comfortable to take a short snooze. Terminal 1 is the best place for good sleeping spots, and security guards here seem to round up overnight campers into a designated area, equipped with benches and carpeting. You may be able to use the seats and benches for makeshift beds when restaurants close. If you’re in Terminal 3, keep your eyes peeled for one of the couches that are lying flat. Wherever you stay overnight, expect security guards to verify your id and boarding pass, otherwise, they can kick you out. Many travellers have reported bright lights and noise so carry your earplugs and an eye mask along. Day-rooms can be reserved by the hour for uninterrupted sleep on the airside of Terminals 1 and 2, and a capsule hotel is adjacent to Terminal 2. Otherwise, nearby hotels provide visitors with free shuttle service.

10. Zurich International Airport
Zürich Airport is Switzerland’s biggest international airport and is Swiss International Air Lines ‘ headquarters airport at the 2019 World Airport Awards Zurich Facility was named Best Airport Security Processing in the World. This Airport is our last entry in our top 10 airports in the world
What to Expect
Zurich Airport is divided into Center Airport and Center Airside. The Airport Center holds operations on the landside such as check-in desks and security checkpoints. The Airside Center functions as the hub for the three terminal/gate areas: A, B / D, and E. Terminal E is located in a separate building which is linked by underground train Skymetro. Upon completion in 2021 a new facility, currently under construction, will replace Terminal A.
Dining and shopping are plentiful (and expensive), though they are all nearby 10:00 PM. Pack late-night meals accordingly, as no eateries remain open 24 hours.
Other conveniences include free Wi-Fi, an assigned resting area with reclining napping chairs and pay-to-use showers. Passengers in the Economy class can pay to access some of the airport lounges.
Where to Sleep.
Airport security is typically considerate of the few late-night campers, and they’ll likely check your ID and boarding pass. They also distribute a brochure to the pay-to-use napping area at the airport if you are interested in more convenience-for a fee. Travellers acknowledge that they are more relaxed on the airside than on the ground. Most gates are quiet at 11:00 pm and the benches offer some stretching spots.
Common complaints are the chilly days and bright lights; however, this is nothing that can’t be fixed by an extra layer and an eye mask and blanket. Try out the Gates B / D transit hotel and the conventional hotel attached to the Airport Centre for uninterrupted sleep. Nearby hotels often provide airport shuttles which are free or charged.
